Apps Changing Communication

Something I found really interesting was in the chapter How Conversations Change was that our way of communication has differed a lot more since this book has been published. There is an app for everything, thus for certain things that used to warrant every day socialization with people, it is not necessary to socialize.

Do you need to go to the bank today? Well you don’t have to because there’s banking apps and direct deposit. Do you need to go to the store? Again, you don’t have to because there’s apps you can order food and either pick up or have it delivered. Listen to music? Don’t need to leave your house, you can just download apps that provide songs. There are so many apps out there that provide an alternative to in person socialization from dating to having a Health app instead of going to the gym, our way of communication has changed significantly. I mean even some kids could think “what is the point in spending all day in an arcade when you could do the same thing while laying in bed?”

Even if you wanted to talk to someone “face-to-face” there are so many video chatting apps that you can even do that through your phone. At least once a day I FaceTime my mom as a substitute for going to her house every single day. In fact, some schools plan to continue the use of video chatting on days that school cannot be held in person due to weather as a substitute for in person classes.

  1. I think about this every time I use my phone to deposit a check. I think, "should I feel bad for the bank tellers since this takes their work away?" I know that's silly, but it is also another social interaction replaced by technology.

    1. And I think many of the big companies have publicized their intentions to be more A.I. driven when it comes to production or a framework that leans less on people and more on tech, so that's interesting. I wonder how it's going to work out for all.

  2. Yes, and I wonder what the repercussions of these things will be, if any? I mean, I use apps for entertainment, for sure. I love my podcasts and music. I def take part and I'm curious as to how these conveniences will affect us down the road. Or will they? Nothing's free, right?

    1. I agree the repercussions could be leaving many people without jobs. After I got a kindle for Christmas, Barnes and Noble went out if business near me.. not kidding I swore it was my fault my entire childhood.
